What is E-residency Card of Estonia

Let talk about an initiative which help us to work remotely in Estonia.

E-residency is a government issued digital identity card that provides entrepreneurs with access to Estonia's transparent digital business environment.

This card is issued by Estonian Police and Boarder Guard Board (PPA). They take your document like copy of passport, CV, passport size photo in Digital format and fees of 120 Euro that can be paid with all leading Debit or Credit cards.

After processing your documents, PPA will generate a 11 digit card number which has you sex details, date of birth and serial number. 

For example:

39101301111

SYYMMDDXXXX

S represent you sex, Male or Female. 3 stands for Male and 4 stands for Female.

YY represent the year of your birth. Like you born year is 1991.

MM represents Month of your birth. Like your birth month in January (01).

DD represents your date of birth. Like you birth day date is 30. 

XXXX represents the serial number issued by Boarder Police.


After receiving it from the Embassy or counsulate which is near to you, you are required to do 2 following steps:

  1. Verifying it on Politsei website. (https://www2.politsei.ee/en/teenused/inquiries/) 
  2. Download of software to use this card. (https://www.id.ee/artikkel/paigalda-id-tarkvara/)


This card come in a welcome kit which has a Digital Card, Document which has PIN1, PIN2, PUK number and a card reader which help you to connect you card to your computer.

This is card give you access to all following services given by government of Estonia.

  • Opening a company online through Estonian company registration portal.
  • Logging in to Estonian tax and custom portal.
  • To digitally sign a document. you can open files which are sent to you from official with digital signature. 

To digitally sign documents and to logging into any portal with E-residency card, you have to download 2 softwares which are available on government website (https://www.id.ee/artikkel/paigalda-id-tarkvara/) TeRa and DigiDoc 4 Client.


Who should apply it?

This is a digital identity card, almost anyone can apply but suggested for following:
  • Digital Nomad
  • Freelancers
  • Startup company
  • Digital Entrepreneur 
  • if a person is living and working in Estonia but without residence permit then he or she should also apply this as this gives you your's Estonian identification numbers which last with you for your lifetime and you can access all government services online. 

Useful tip: Don't think that E-residency card can help you in getting Visa or it is give you right to reside in Estonia.
